This video showcases why there is a need for technology integration within our school system. Having the requisite knowledge to function in a globalized world is essential. As Educators we are tasked with providing the necessary tools and knowledge base for our students to avail themselves of available opportunities.
Understanding the needs of a 21st century learning is both exciting and complex. As highlighted in the above video, the needs of a 21st century learners is vastly different and constantly being influenced by the changing demands of the society. What this means, is that educators have to keep pace, embrace and reflect the changing demands in how we teach and prepare learners for dynamic and fluid digital world in which they live.
I agree with your sentiments Cheryl. As educators we have to be willing to embrace a technological environments as it has implications for how we disseminate knowledge to our students. We must encourage each other to be open using the digital tools in our arsenal and to be more collaborative as we seek to ensure our students benefit fully.
This changing digital world is proving to be a game changer in every aspect of life. If we are to remain equipotential with everything in this developing world including education, we as educators must take this task seriously to ensure that our future citizens will be competent to operate and contribute to this evolving world.
Consider also that there may be some push back from educators who are not au fait with the current technology or the use of many digital tools, so we must also ensure that when training is provided we encourage our colleagues to utilize the opportunities presented. We must collaborate and find ways to stimulate interest to guarantee that our staff too can operate and contribute thereby safeguard our 21 century learners.
I do agree Katherene, but I also believe that this is a holistic situation which must be encouraged by the entire educational system. It is okay for teachers to make themselves available to learn the latest in technology but it also depends heavily on the infrastructure in place at the various schools. For example, is the internet connectivity at school reliable and or there enough working devices to teach a class?
Even though we acknowledge the importance of technology integration into the classroom, I think we should also acknowledge that technology evolves at a rapid pace and it's hard to learn new ways of doing things plus keep pace with evolving technology. I also believe that the onus should not only be placed on teachers to familiarize themselves with the new technology but that teacher training programmes should also integrate the use of technology into their programmes.
